UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027. The examination will be conducted for recruitment to various Group A and Group B posts in the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines, and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Jal Shakti.

UPSC Geo-Scientist 2027 Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit

Candidates must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained 32 years as on 1 January 2027.

Therefore, candidates must have been born:

Not earlier than 02 January 1995 and not later than 01 January 2006.

Age relaxation is available to eligible reserved and other categories as per the rules. For example, the upper age limit is relaxable by up to 5 years for SC/ST candidates and up to 3 years for eligible OBC candidates.

Educational Qualification

The required qualification depends upon the post/stream.

Geologist

Candidates should possess a Master’s degree in subjects such as:

  • Geological Science
  • Geology
  • Applied Geology
  • Geo-Exploration
  • Mineral Exploration
  • Engineering Geology
  • Marine Geology
  • Earth Science and Resource Management
  • Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies
  • Petroleum Geosciences

Geophysicist / Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics)

Candidates should have an M.Sc. in:

or an eligible equivalent qualification specified in the notification.

Chemist / Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical)

Candidates should possess an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a recognized university/institution.

Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology) / Assistant Hydrogeologist

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in:

  • Geology
  • Applied Geology
  • Marine Geology
  • Hydrogeology

Assistant Chemist

Eligible qualifications include an M.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Hydro-Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry.

Assistant Geologist

Candidates should possess a Master’s or Integrated Master’s degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Mineral Exploration, Marine Geology or Earth Science.

Assistant Geophysicist

Candidates should possess an M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech.) or Integrated M.Sc. in subjects including Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Geo-Exploration, Marine Geophysics, Physics, Applied Physics or Applied Geology.

UPSC Geo-Scientist Examination 2027 Selection Process

The selection process consists of three stages:

  1. Stage-I: Preliminary Examination
  2. Stage-II: Main Examination
  3. Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview

The Preliminary Examination is objective type, the Main Examination is conventional/descriptive type, and the final stage is the Personality Test/Interview.

Application Fee

The application fee is ₹200.

Candidates can pay the fee through:

  • Net Banking
  • Visa/Master/RuPay Credit or Debit Card
  • UPI

Fee Exemption: Female candidates, SC/ST candidates and eligible Persons with Benchmark Disabilities are exempted from payment of the fee. OBC/EWS candidates are not exempted and have to pay the prescribed fee.

The Preliminary Examination is proposed to be conducted at centres including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi, Dispur, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Prayagraj, Shillong, Shimla and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Commission has stated that centre allotment will generally follow a first-apply-first-allot basis where a ceiling applies, so candidates are advised to apply early if they want a preferred centre.
