SSC JE Recruitment 2026: The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the notification for the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026. Through this examination, SSC will recruit candidates for various Junior Engineer (JE) posts in different Government of India organizations/offices. The examination also includes the post of Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The posts are classified as Group ‘B’, with Pay Level-6 (₹35,400–₹1,12,400) in the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix.

A total of 1,748 tentative vacancies have been notified. Eligible candidates can submit the SSC JE 2026 online application form from 2 September 2026 to 22 September 2026 through the official SSC website.

SSC JE (Junior Engineer) Vacancy 2026

SSC has announced 1,748 tentative vacancies for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026. The Commission has stated that the post-wise and category-wise final vacancies will be made available on the SSC website under the Tentative Vacancy section. State-wise or zone-wise vacancies are not collected by SSC.

SSC JE Recruitment 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification varies according to the post and engineering branch.

Junior Engineer (Civil)

Depending upon the organization, candidates may require a Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute/Board. For certain posts such as BRO and MES, candidates with a Diploma may also need the prescribed work experience.

Junior Engineer (Electrical)

Candidates must possess the prescribed Degree/Diploma in Electrical Engineering. For certain organizations, the notification also prescribes relevant experience for Diploma holders.

Junior Engineer (Mechanical)

Candidates require a Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, depending on the organization.

Junior Engineer (Telecom)

Candidates require a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in specified disciplines such as:

  • Electrical
  • Electronics
  • Electrical Communications
  • Computer Science
  • Telecommunications
  • Information Technology
  • Instrumentation

from a recognized University/Institute.

Scientific Assistant – IMD

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects, or the prescribed Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electronics Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Telecommunication Engineering or Communication Engineering.

Important: Wherever experience is prescribed, the experience must have been acquired after obtaining the requisite educational qualification. Internship, training or research experience obtained during the course of acquiring the qualification will not be treated as the required experience.

Age Limit

The crucial date for determining age is 01 August 2026.

For posts with an upper age limit of 30 years

The candidate must have been born between:

02 August 1996 and 01 August 2008

For posts with an upper age limit of 32 years

The candidate must have been born between:

02 August 1994 and 01 August 2008

SSC JE Application Fee

The application fee is ₹100.

Fee Exemption

The following candidates are exempted from paying the application fee:

  • Women candidates
  • SC candidates
  • ST candidates
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)
  • Ex-Servicemen (ESM)

The fee can be paid online through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or RuPay Debit Card.

The SSC JE examination will be conducted in two papers: Paper-I and Paper-II. Both papers are Computer-Based Examinations.

The notification states that the engineering questions for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical are approximately at Diploma level, while Computer Science & IT, Electronics & Telecommunication, Physics and Telecommunication subjects are approximately at graduation level.

SSC JE 2026 Selection Process

The selection process is based on performance in the Computer-Based Examination and post/organization preferences.

The minimum qualifying marks in both Paper-I and Paper-II are:

  • UR: 30%
  • OBC/EWS: 25%
  • All other categories: 20%

Paper-I is qualifying in nature. Candidates are shortlisted for Paper-II based on normalized Paper-I marks, while only normalized Paper-II scores are used for determining final merit.

Final selection/allocation of Post, Organization or Office is based on Paper-II performance and the preferences submitted by candidates.

For posts having specific physical/medical requirements, candidates must satisfy those requirements. In particular, only male candidates are eligible for JE posts in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
